World-famous circular human sculptures submerged in turquoise coral waters
Resting just a short swim off the white sand shores of Gili Meno, The Nest is one of the most mesmerizing underwater art installations in Southeast Asia. Created by renowned British eco-sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the artwork consists of 48 life-sized human figures intertwined in a circular embrace on the seabed.
Constructed entirely from pH-neutral environmental concrete, the installation was carefully positioned in 2017 to foster marine life. Today, vibrant soft corals, colorful sponges, and schools of damselfish have claimed the sculptures, transforming the silent human circle into a thriving living reef.
Snorkelers can float gently directly above the formation at a depth of roughly 4 meters. The morning sunlight filters through the azure sea, creating ethereal rays that illuminate the serene expressions of the statues. Keep an eye out for resident green sea turtles, who regularly drift by to graze on the adjacent seagrass beds.
Pro Traveler Tip: Most group tours from Bali and Lombok arrive between 10:30 AM and 01:00 PM. Book a private morning boat departure from Padang Bai or stay overnight in Gili Air/Meno to swim out at 07:30 AM when you'll have the magical underwater world entirely to yourself.
